Dysmal Abyss formed during the cold winter of 2009 in Mid-coast Maine in response to a locally posted flyer calling for like-minded individuals to start a band, citing influences such as Herzog's "Aguirre", unfocused resentment, early SST records, Raymond Carver, alcoholism, free jazz, and mom's new boyfriend. 15 year old Randy Nichols responded and the rest is history.
